The New Year scarcely had begun,
Twas 1998,
The Ice Storm in its fury struck,
And brought our wintergate,

In the night rain began falling,
You could hear it on the trees,
Then the mercury started dropping,
As our world began to freeze,

Like a ship without a compass,
Through woodland, field and town,
Came the Ice Storm of the century,
Knocking towers and forests down,

On the highways and the by-ways,
Power lines lay across the road,
Their icy weight too much to bear,
Finally breaking from the load,

The sturdy oaks and maples,
So majestic, strong and tall,
Gave forth a cracking echo,
As they too were forced to fall,

It's a storm we'll long remember,
In our lives it left it's mark, ,
With no power for lights or heating,
We just romanced in the dark.
