Let's go where snow Just grows on trees Oh please be mine for all of time Be the wooden barrel and I will be the wine My smoker's cough is subtle But my love is a castle My smoker's cough is subtle But my love is an everlasting castle Let's go were fields of snow Are so fucking beautiful they bring us to our knees Please be mine for all of time Be the wooden barrel and I will be the wine My smoker's cough is subtle But my love is a castle My smoker's cough is subtle But my love is an everlasting castle Let's go where snow Just grows on trees Oh please be mine for all of time Be the wooden barrel and I will be the wine

Like That 01:41
I grew up on TV and radio songs Stayed out with the boys for way too long Fell in love with the moon and never looked back That's why today I am like that I am like that I ate bread and cheese the first 25 years of my life Drank up the stars when I turned 25 I invented a new kind of song to pass the time That's why today I am like that She surrendered to the earth and walked around the world Never knew she was hurt she just kept on going on And she waltzed down her path That's why today I am like that I am like that And that and that and that I'm like that

The Edge 02:10
I see you sitting on the edge of your seat You are living out your Canadian dream Well it's my turn now to sing a song for thee For all the angels and for all the queens It won't go away It can't love won't go away No word is the last one Just come out and play I hear you laughing in the branches of your tree Looks awful lonely up there above the human breeze Let's go monkeying around let's go see what's to see I don't wanna miss one thing not if you're with me It won't go away Not in a million years It won't go away Not in a trillion years It won't go away It can't love won't go away No word is the last one Why are you sitting on the edge of your seat? Why are you laughing in the branches of your tree? Why are you sitting on the edge of your seat? Why are you laughing in the branches of your tree?

There must be something sweet That fills up my body When I sleep And when I dream There has to be a time at night When magical fairies fill up the sky And enter me Through the holes in my skin We have all to win But we are losing touch We have all to lose But we are winning, winning, we're winning this Some time last December I encountered a figure Gathering up her rocks from off the round She told me that they were the eggs of a dragon And me I played along Then someone said we were out of our heads Then someone said we were out of our heads Then someone said we were out of our heads Then someone said we were out of our heads If someone says you are out of your head If someone says you are out of your head If someone says you are out of your head It's not because of what you did but because of what you said
5.
Summer strolls in the rain Golden flowers at dawn All our friends are away They left the party at dawn What is that on your face? It looks like you have just cried Come on my love I am here Let's do all the things that you like
6.
Bring me to your secret place That garden in your mind That garden in your mind Will never be broken And sing me your songs Promise they'll take long before being done And answer me this Are these lips you could kiss? Bring me to your secret place That garden in your mind That garden in your mind Will never be broken Once there I'll plant a seed That'll grow into the biggest tree you've ever seen The biggest tree The biggest tree you've ever seen Bring me to your secret place That garden in your mind That garden in your mind Will never be broken

All of my friends are wampires Pure, golden, gipsy-hippies I will love each one of them I encourage their growth But there is a line We will never cross We won't be what you want us to be That would be too much

about

On Wampire, each song serves as a container for a specific feeling from the quadrant of the emotion wheel where romantic cynicism and pragmatic stoicism meet. Recorded with the help of remote (Montreal-based) collaborators during the 2020 lockdown, the songs’ dramas are brought to life with the help of friends’ contributions of reverb-laced violin, drifty, perfectly-imperfect back-up vocals, bass, guitar, synth, Indian flute, and percussion. The result is a sharing of scenes--imagined or otherwise--showing the narrator gazing from the edge of an emotional precipice, the kind that catches you off guard. Love, be it with friends, family, lovers, or even the love and compassion we give to our former selves, is the name of the precipice where Booster Fawn’s garden grows.

The first song “My Smoker’s Cough is Subtle, But My Love is a Castle” is a ballad that waltzes through moonlit snow-covered landscapes, mirror ball not included. A taste for whimsical hyperbole continues into the standout track “Like That,” the video for which, featuring home video clips of his family, Joshua filmed and directed. An uptempo dizzying ride through Joshua’s life and coming of age, “[growing] up on TV and radio songs,” the song tries (in vain) to provide an answer for why he is “like that” -- why he switched from eating “bread and cheese” to “[drinking] up the stars,” breaking from the family ways of life, and living the life of a musician in the city. “The Edge” takes a more confrontational tack, the narrator remarking that someone’s living their Canadian dream, laughing in the branches of their tree: an impassioned hook-heavy uptempo lament about smug people. In the fanciful waltz “Dragon Eggs (If Someone Says You Are Out Of Your Head)” the narrator imagines fairies entering his skin while he dreams, while a folksy art-damaged violin saws in time. Cascades of ominously processed violin runs introduce “Wampires Longingly Dream of the Old World,” as a drone mounts in intensity before the song’s grand finale. “Bring Me To Your Secret Place” is another ballad that is also an ominous lullaby. According to Joshua, “all throughout there’s a synthesizer noise floor which represents to me the uncertainty of the times we are living in. How can one love truly and deeply while the world is on fire?” The last song, “All of My Friends Are Wampires” is a soaring almost Oasis-y power ballad that serves as an ode to Joshua’s fellow “wampires,” a shorthand for a coven of friends and collaborators whose “growth” Joshua encourages, “but there is a a line / a very fine line / we will never cross / we won’t be what you want us to be / that would be too much.” A song about integrity and not selling out in this economy? Hell yeah.
